The Unionist Pie

The following to the tune of Don McLeans American Pie

A long long time ago
I can still remember how
Labour once believed In democracy
But now I know if they get the chance
They’ll make the disaffected dance
with their bullying and their bribing for a while
But February has made them shiver
With every paper that’s delivered
Bad news on their doorstep
Labour couldn’t take one more step
They can’t remember if she cried
But the tv news told more besides
They should have thrown them all inside
The Day Glasgow Labour Died

And we were singing

Bye Bye to your Unionist Pie
You slooshed your morals down the cludgie now the cludgie is dry
All your good ole boys are drinking whiskey and Rye
Greetin this’ll be the day that we die
Gonna someone please find a good Lie

They sure didn’t write the book of love
And if they have faith in God above
They know what’s comin to them in the end
But we believe in Indie rock and roll
and Scottish Labours lost its Soul
And ye cannae teach them decency they don’t know

Bye Bye to your Unionist Pie
You slooshed your morals down the cludgie now the cludgie is dry
All your good ole boys are drinking whiskey and Rye
Greetin this’ll be the day that we die
Gonna someone please find a good Lie

Now, for 50 years they’ve had it all their own
And slime grows fat on a provosts throne
But, that’s not how it used to be
When Hardie spoke of his Home Rule Dreams
When Jimmy Reid caused a Clydeside Scene
Their voices spoke in the tongues of you and me
But when John Smiths body was lying down
Some Smiler stole his thorny crown
The Labour Party was adjourned
its beliefs they did not return
So Sheridan read a book on Marx
and the SSP practiced in the park
Some Scots sang dirges in the dark
The day the Labour party died

No were singin’

Bye Bye to your Unionist Pie
You slooshed your morals down the cludgie now the cludgie is dry
All your good ole boys are drinking whiskey and Rye
Greetin this’ll be the day that we die
Gonna someone please find a good Lie

Oh, so there they were all in one place
A generation lost in space
With no time left to start again
So come on Jack be nimble, Jack be quick
Jack McConnell sat on a candlestick
Cause fire is the devil’s only friend
And as we watched him on the stage
Our hands were clenched in fists of rage
at weasel words all born in Hell
But Salmond broke that Satan’s spell
And as the Cheers rang high into the night
To light the sacrificial rite
I saw God laughing with delight
The day the Union died

About auldacquaintance

I am not a member of any political party. I am however a strong supporter of Scots Independence. Any views which I express in this Blog are purely my own. This Blog intends to be a place where I will be putting my views on Scots Independence. It will primarily concern itself with the upcoming Referendum In Scotland. However It will also be somewhat diverse in the range of day to day issues which are evident to me in modern day Scotland. Not all of it will be political, and indeed may take me off into avenues I am not even aware of yet. Please come and join in on this journey, and any comments are welcome provided they are not abusive! All the best from a new acquaintance! Rod

  1. I’ll let you away with a song I used to sing in pubs in a small Ayrshire town It is one of my favouite all-time songs. Now that tune will be in my head all day I must re-learn these words. Well done

    Love it. Excellent rewording.

Way back when Blair was still clinging on to power but palpably losing, I re-penned another old classic, not a patch on yours but perhaps worth a swatch, note the first line refers to revelations at the time to Tony’s make-up expenses claim.

Tony (To the Tune of “Ruby” of Kenny Roger’s fame)

    You’ve painted up your lips
And combed and waved your tinted hair
    Tony are you contemplating
    Going out somewhere
The writing on the wall tells me
    That you are going down
    Oh To-Oh-nee
Don’t give the job to Brown.

    It wasn’t you that started
    That old crazy Iraq war
But you were proud to go and be
    A Yankee luvin whore
It may be true that you were once
    the man that most believed
    But To-Oh-nee
    Too many folk have grieved

Its hard to love a man
Whose cred is spent and paralysed
And the wants and the needs of a nutter like Bush
    Tony I realize,
But it won’t be long I’ve heard them say
    until you’re not around
    Oh To-Oh-nee
Don’t give the job to Brown

    Your leaving now cause
I just heard nails scraping on the floor
    Thatcher had more dignity
    But you screwed Labour more
If you could choose, you’d let Brown lose
    And Cameron you’d crown.
    So To-Oh-nee
Don’t give the job to Brown.

    And To-Oh-nee
    Please DON’T turn around
