Same Sex Marriage

The Wolves are out in force, Howling at the moon and baying for blood!
The reason why? Because the Scottish Government put off making a decision on legislating on the issue, after having received around 80,000 responses to their consultation on the matter.

That is just terrible is it not? It is an absolute disgrace, the same sex marriage campaigners and their political opponents scream!
There has been a veritable barrage of complaints on line and in the news and on social media sites and no doubt Blogs and newspapers very shortly.

It is awful isn’t it? They really should have made their decision today as they had advised the press and all interested parties that they would do!
They have seriously let everyone down by this disgraceful shilly shallying.
The Gay marriage campaigners are livid, they suspect a stitch up in favour of the status quo, and that aint rocking all over their world for them. Or they suspect that this delaying tactic is designed to try and put the decision off as long as possible for political reasons.

On the other side the religious groups are also complaining because they want the decision right now, and they want the whole issue binned yesterday. What do the Scottish Government think they are playing at? Get on with It, and don’t anyone even suggest that Jesus might have been a fairy! One Marriage for Heterosexual couples only, no marriage for sinful gays…End Of!

So which year, decade or millennium have the Scottish Government put their momentous decision off till?
Errr….this year, and by the end of this month, within 13 days!

They have obviously decided that they would like another couple of weeks to think things over, they want to make sure that they are comfortable with the response they make… What is so bloomin dreadful about taking time to think something through, and have all their eggs in place? After all, there are a lot of people seemingly in an anxious state over this, and surely they wouldn’t want have half baked Ill thought out decision and response? Would they?

So if you find yourself howling at the moon, and in a rage about this?
Go see a therapist, you are obviously in need of resolving your priorities and finding a real life…whether it be a Gay one or otherwise!

In short…Get a bloomin Grip!

About auldacquaintance

I am not a member of any political party. I am however a strong supporter of Scots Independence. Any views which I express in this Blog are purely my own. This Blog intends to be a place where I will be putting my views on Scots Independence. It will primarily concern itself with the upcoming Referendum In Scotland. However It will also be somewhat diverse in the range of day to day issues which are evident to me in modern day Scotland. Not all of it will be political, and indeed may take me off into avenues I am not even aware of yet. Please come and join in on this journey, and any comments are welcome provided they are not abusive! All the best from a new acquaintance! Rod

  1. Too funny all of this,I just wish we could all just be equal, and will we be happy?
I just think unless all are equal, and that means all having the same choices, then none of us are equal.

  2. i’m fairly indifferent, on the one hand i say yes everyone should be entitled to be married but on the other hand churches shouldnt be forced to marry people if it is against their religion to do so. I got married in a registry office and i dont feel any less married than if it had been in a church.

    • Churches aren’t being asked to marry anyone against their will, Margaret.
It has always been the case with marriage or any rite of passage that the church/celebrant can refuse to conduct, and they don’t need to give a reason why,, if they don’t want to.
This proposed legislation will not alter that fact.
Nor indeed are all religious groups against the legislation, It is just that those who are shouting the loudest are the ones being heard.

      • fitheach says:

There is an argument that ministers of religion might be forced to marry same sex couples if legislation is passed. The argument goes thus: getting married is not a human right but if same sex marriage legislation is passed denying a couple then becomes an equality issue. The law would then have to be applied equally to all citizens. A national parliament, Scotland or UK, could legislate for same sex marriage but could not avoid the equality issue which would be decided by the European Court of Human Rights.

I don’t know if the argument is valid or not and I suspect that finding the answer would take many months and would involve lots of lawyers and judges.

      • There is no question of any church minister being forced to marry anyone.
Ministers exercise that right over traditional heterosexual marriage, so same sex marriage could not be any different, because then they would be saying that ministers had no option but to marry everyone without question. That is not going to happen!

“There is no question of any church minister being forced to marry anyone.”

Do you have a citation to support your assertion? I don’t have an axe to grind on this issue, as I have no interest in marraige nor am I religious, but I don’t think it is possible to be so definitive in your statement. Take a look at this blog post: http://religionlaw.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/same-sex-marriage-and-european-court.html

Your blog doesn’t provide a reply link for comments at the third level, so, this comment is in the wrong place.

      • I cannot comment on the position of Church and State in England..where both are intertwined…The church being part of the state there, may be obligated in law to provide exactly the same services for Gay Marriage as in Government Registrars.
In Scotland I can categorically say that there is no such obligation…Simply because in Scots Law, the Church is Disestablished. Which means that the Church has no part in State governance, and the State cannot interfere in matters of Church Law.
A Minister or Priest in Scotland is perfectly at liberty to refuse to marry anyone, and they do not need to give a reason for that decision if they do not want to. It is a matter of Individual choice.
In the even of Gay marriage being permitted, that does not take that Individual choice away, and It is therefore treated in exactly the same way as heterosexual marriage. .

However, I should perhaps add, that where it may cause real problems is in the exercise of religious freedom.
While I cannot see this legislation in any way forcing religious bodies or persons to marry a gay couple, if it is against the churches or celebrants will.
It could none the less cause real potential conflict, legal and otherwise, for Civil Registrars who might have a conflict of faith over the matter. If they refuse to do their statutory duty by law, in marrying a gay couple, they could find themselves dismissed or at the least disciplined. They could also find themselves up in court on a criminal charge. These civilians do not have the same rights and protection that Churches and ordinands have, so are wide open to punishment for holding strongly held religious morals and beliefs.

I should again point out, that not all religious bodies are against same sex marriage, indeed some leave it entirely up to the ordained to make their own choice on same sex marriage, and will register their church denominations to allow such marriages to take place in their buildings.

I hope this clarifies the position for you.

  3. Brian Hill says:

Well put auldacquaintance. the SNP Government has gone further than any other party in Scotland or indeed much further than Westminster ever has.

Gay Scotland needs to get real and welcome the phenomenal gains so far, including today where a Referendum was knocked on the head and the promise of an announcement is only two weeks away.

There are hundreds of thousands of us who want an even more Liberal Scotland than so far on offer, a Scotland we can work towards AFTER Independence but FIRST we have to get Independence and that will mean delays over many issues like the currency, the monarchy and now perhaps NATO.

So we swallow all of that for now then tackle it as a matter of urgency once the dust has settled and we elect our first Scottish Government. Till then we should only have one thought in our tiny minds: VOTE YES in 2014

  4. Jim says:

Nobody is going to be forced to do anything
So why all the silly threats and grumbles .
Life goes on and nobody gets forced to do
    Anything against their will.
