Hacked Off, Scunnered,Delete,Reset, and Start again.

For the past thirty hours, I have been literally cursing my head off, completely scunnered, and ready for tearing some malicious twerps to pieces, If only I could get my hands on them.

why all the upset and rage you might ask?
Quite simply, I clicked on a link my son had seemingly left on his twitter account. Only the link took me where I was not expecting to go. It took me to a porn site with pictures of loads of naked women.
Now being a normal red blooded heterosexual male, you might think that would not be too upsetting for me. You would be wrong.
As soon as I realised what it was, I immediately exited the site, and sent a warning text to my son, to delete the message and link immediately.
You see, I knew he hadn’t posted it, and whats more it was from his bands account..So I also knew that somebody had indeed hacked into their twitter.
I then discovered that the bands website was completely taken off the internet. I knew they had been having problems with it, because It too had been targeted by hackers recently. So its absence was of no great surprise.
What I hoped was that the link and the page I had visited, was only a mild attack on their account. I soon discovered that my hope was in vain.
Very soon after all this had transpired, my laptop started playing up, and eventually crashed.
To save all the gory details of all that took place, I shall cut this story short.
The upshot, was that after trying to do a windows repair, it still wouldn’t let me log on to windows.
I then tried, a quick re install, that failed. Eventually, I had no option but to completely format windows, delete everything, and start from scratch.
In the process, I not only lost years of documents, photographs, files, music, stuff that I had been keeping to write about, including a couple of articles for here, but I also lost a whole load of necessary drivers, programmes, and functionality for my laptop.
If I wasn’t so busy swearing my head off, I would have been in floods of tears.
However, here I am, back again. I still have one hell of a lot of downloading to do, and it will take me some time to be up and running in full working order again. I am starting all over again from scratch.

I am sure that some of you reading this, have suffered similar experiences in the past, so you will know what it is like. Others who have been more fortunate, can also imagine what it is like to lose so much stored history, treasured evidence of memories, and to begin again, building a new system.

When the worst happens, when you lose everything, when you have lost all your history, where do you go? what do you do?
You could decide, stuff it…and just throw your computer in the bin.But you wont!
So if you really want to make your system work..and get it functioning to a point you are surfing quite happily with it, talking to your friends on social websites, catching up with the news, seeing what is going on in the world today.
If you have a c.v to write, emails to send and receive, bills to pay, shopping to get, or just have a little bit of pleasure listening to your music on youtube, or watching some tv programme, or learning something new in the Internets vast information library. You Start again, and you start from scratch.

In the process, you will hit a whole load of problems. You will be tearing your hair out at times, trying to figure out what new drivers you need, and where to get them?
You will be downloading a mountain of downloads, as you get your security systems set up, your firewalls, your anti virus, trying to get your sound and wifi to function. A whole load of problems, and a whole load of time.

But once you have it up and running, you will discover something else. Your computer is cleaner, it acts quicker, it loads faster, and it is almost like having a new computer again. You see, you may have lost a whole load of history, but you can still remember where to get the most important stuff you need.
You will have got rid of a colossal pile of junk files, stuff you never used anyway, broken links, and conflicting software.

You will be lighter, slicker, and breezing along in no time. So maybe it’s not so bad after all?

Ok..Why have I been yammering on about my computer problems? This is supposed to be a site about Independence Isn’t it? Well It was when I looked at it last.
Quite simply this:
Lets have a wee analogy here.
Independence is like starting a new computer install.
When we become Independent again, we will be starting from a new beginning. We will have to think about what systems we want to put in place. We will have a whole load of fresh thinking to do. We will face problems, but none that are insurmountable. We will seek to learn a whole load of new things, we might even need to talk to our friends, and get some advice about some things. It is not going to change over night, it will take time,as we work things out together. But once we are past the more difficult initial challenges, we will have a lot of fun, and we will set new programmes in place, we will have better more up to date drivers, and we will function so much better. We will be able to make decisions quicker, and adjust to the world faster, because we are smaller and more compact. We maybe even create a few new things which nobody has ever thought about.
We will have a whole number of new challenges, but challenges are not so problematic, if we are actually working towards creating something. Whats more as we achieve each new goal, we will feel a sense of achievement and pride. We did it!!

In a sense, the Union of the United Kingdoms, Is like my old system.
It worked grand in its day, once upon a time. It never really suited us all that well, but it did.
But these days are long gone, and Indeed we in Scotland have been regularly complaining that we needed to get a new system since the late 1800’s, only for us to get some sort of patch eventually in 1997. But patches only cover over some problems, they fail to address the wider and bigger problems in the system.
My old system, was becoming increasingly problematic, slow and malfunctioning more and more regularly. It was cluttered, It had too much junk, too many conflicting problems, and its drivers needed badly updated, and it kept crashing and freezing. Basically…It was past it! But I didn’t want to change it.
It seemed like too much bother, I was used to it, I didn’t want to go and learn how to operate a new system, and I felt I couldn’t afford one anyway. So I just persevered.

It was only when my system was so completely messed up that it had become impossible to function or use, that I eventually had to go to work sorting it all out. Really, I should have sorted it out long ago.

But none of us like change do we? We like to know that everything is ordered as we expect, that our habits are not disturbed, that our routines are as they should be.
We will often hold onto things long past their sell by date, because we are comfortable with them.
It doesn’t matter if they are slightly battered or worn, or not even performing properly, because we form attachments to them, and when someone says that we need to change some things, we cry out in horror, “But that’s the way it’s Aye been!” even if the Aye Been, has never been the Aye Been.

It is this habit of human behaviour which the Better Together campaign are playing heavily on. And anyone that knows anything about bad habits which are not good for us, and trying to quit them, will testify..It aint easy to kick some things, even if we know deep down they are no good for us!

Change goes on in our world daily, and we adjust to it, and quite often don’t even think about it. We are quite happy, until somebody points out that we must change something ourselves…And we throw up our hands in horror….Oh No No No…we can’t be doing that! It’s too difficult, too many problems, and what If this happens, or what if that doesn’t work?
We will search for all sorts of excuses, we are quite happy to listen those who tell us,”It wont work” “Its too difficult” “We can’t afford it”
For us to accept that we need the necessary change, you really need to sell it to us! You can’t just go saying it will work, that it’s better, Life will improve, It will function more smoothly. That frankly is nowhere good enough. We have to know more than that! We need to know just what it will do, what real difference it will make to our lives, that our everyday life will be improved in some way by it.
We are not particularly interested about its technicalities, what Ram capacity it has, how many gigabytes has it got? Sure they are important in making it function…But we want to do stuff with it, we want to play with it, we want to work with it, we want to learn with it, we want it to help make our daily lives more enjoyable… SO tell us the good stuff!!

My old system was well past it, the Union is well past past it. My system was full of corrupted files, the Union is full of Corrupted politicians and authority figures. My system was not performing as it should, the Union is broken, bust and ready for the knackers yard. My system needed replacing, the Union needs to be put out of our misery. My system was taken down by malicious hackers, the Union has been been broken by corrupt and perverse people too.

I would dearly have loved to have gone shopping for a new up to date laptop, with all the flashing bells and whistles and latest technology..But I couldn’t afford it. I am broke, I have no money, I have been on the dole with no prospects for over a year. There appears to be no decent jobs out there, nobody thinks I am up to much, too old maybe at 50? And the cost of eating, and heating and just keeping a roof over my head is pushing me to the limits.
DO you fancy living on beans and toast as your diet? Do you worry about Christmas, knowing full well that Santa aint coming to you? Do you really love this British State so much, are you so attached to it, that you cannot envisage for a moment something better?

Well…I maybe not have much, and I maybe have not much left to lose that they haven’t taken from me.
But I sure as hell have a vision of something better….and It need not be perfect, just better than the crap that I had, and which actually works!

Damn right I want Change….and 2014 can’t come quick enough for me!

I am not a member of any political party. I am however a strong supporter of Scots Independence. Any views which I express in this Blog are purely my own. This Blog intends to be a place where I will be putting my views on Scots Independence. It will primarily concern itself with the upcoming Referendum In Scotland. However It will also be somewhat diverse in the range of day to day issues which are evident to me in modern day Scotland. Not all of it will be political, and indeed may take me off into avenues I am not even aware of yet. Please come and join in on this journey, and any comments are welcome provided they are not abusive! All the best from a new acquaintance! Rod

Now that’s a come back post AA. And speaking as a mere 49er whose stared into a similar abyss, yer never too old to cause mischief. Keep it up.

Whose? who’s – Jeez, back to school. 😦

  3. David McCann says:

Why not try a Mac? They aren’t perfect, but close!

  4. This might help if you wish to try to recover some files: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ByMTeZ62RSY

… but remember if we vote for independence there’s no going back, never! that’s it! it’s the end! Except after a time, like so many other countries, like Ireland, like Canada, like India, like USA we will vote to return to the smothering, deadly embrace of London rule.

Try Ubuntu linux (or Xubuntu for a more XP type feel – my preference). All drivers included, very quick to fully reinstall and more resistant to malware. It’s also free!

    • Thanks all…I have managed to get all my drivers now…But trying to get my Wireless working was a bloody nightmare..Sorted eventually.
Now got most of the important programmes reinstalled too. And gradually getting my accounts up and running too.
It will take a while, but I’m getting there.

        I’ll second the Linux recommendation.

To carry your analogy one step further, all you did with your computer was to re-install the same old system. Yes, you may have cleared out all the crud, but a year or two down the line you’ll be right back in the same spot.

The last thing we need is for our nascent independent Scotland to be just a rebooted version of the UK. What we need is an entirely new system; open-sourced, transparent, lightweight, responsive and versatile. Government of the people by the people and for the people, to quote Lincoln.

      • I couldn’t agree more!!!

When you DO decide to junk your old pc, make sure you destroy the hard drive!!
Its amazing the stuff criminals can find even though you think you’ve deleted everything!
If nowt else, the magnets make helluva good door closures! 🙂

Absolutely brilliant analogy. I’m more of a lurker than a poster but have found myself with some unexpected time and surfing a few different sites and just wanted to give you some heartfelt warm wishes and sincerely hope that an employer out there picks up on your abilities soon. (Apologies for lack of punctuation). I’m not much younger than yourself and have been spectacularly lucky over the past 6 years employment wise – our people deserve better, people like us can make a difference – keep fighting. Good luck.

If you need a program which can recover deleted and lost files i recommend Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery. I recovered almost all my Doc’s and photos even from a drive i had re-formatted and installed a new operating system onto. You could give it a try. You may need a usb external drive to store the recovered files to.
If you try the free trial and it works for you send me an email.
