The Crying of the Lambs (poem)

The Crying of the Lambs

They first took our land, and replaced us with sheep
when they burned down our houses, our women did weep
Then sent us like cattle, to some far distant shore
Never again to return, to our homeland once more
There were those that did die, as ship dysentery struck
The old and the frail, with the babes in the muck
And for those left behind, the blight did begin
From starvation they fell, while the Church preached their sins

A century passed, and the lairds carried on
enslaving their people, when eviction was done
Then they banned all our tartan, and stilled every pipe
Our language proscribed, by some Teutonic tripe
As the years all went by, some forget who they were
They sneered at their ain tongues, for anither preferred
They shut down our railways, our shipyards, and steel
And when they found we had oil, that too they did steal

In their wars they had plenty, from Crimea to Iraq
And our menfolk they sent, to blunt enemy attacks
The Boer Wars, The World Wars,The Falklands and on
And we died by the million for all the crimes that they’ve done
They sent us to Canada ,to go and conquer Quebec
Wherever they wanted,Scots where there at their beck
Palestine,The Suez, and over Aden’s barren ground
One year in the last century, we never saw a soldier downed

They have taken our language, they’ve taken our folk
Now they’re for banning our flag, its beyond a pale joke
Next they’ll be taking our name, that too will be banned
And you wont have a Scot, ne’er mind a Scot land
If they do what their wanting, then its us who’re at fault
And we cannot complain, If all our cries come to naught
If like cows to the slaughter, or like sheep to the pen
We’ll aye be poor wee lambs, forever greetin again.

About auldacquaintance

I am not a member of any political party. I am however a strong supporter of Scots Independence. Any views which I express in this Blog are purely my own. This Blog intends to be a place where I will be putting my views on Scots Independence. It will primarily concern itself with the upcoming Referendum In Scotland. However It will also be somewhat diverse in the range of day to day issues which are evident to me in modern day Scotland. Not all of it will be political, and indeed may take me off into avenues I am not even aware of yet. Please come and join in on this journey, and any comments are welcome provided they are not abusive! All the best from a new acquaintance! Rod
