Compassion

Compassion….Such a nice word isn’t it.

Not quite like words such as “Cuts” “Austerity” “Freeze” “Disabled” “poverty” , which are words we an associate with the British Chancellor George Osbournes Autumn? Statement, due tomorrow.
As bad news gets leaked first, we are hearing of yet more attacks on welfare benefits for the worst off.
That the poorest benefit claimants will be poorer as they will receive 1% less than inflation in benefit adjustments…Effectively a cut in their ability to pay for food, heating, clothing etc. The Richest will have some pension raiding, going on,(have to appear to have some balance) but they are able for it I am sure.
There is current ongoing punishments from previous announcements going on.Do you know for instance, that jobseekers no longer receive any help in travel costs when attending interview, to try and get work?
That as from today, that some of disabled will be expected to work stacking shelves and other such tasks for big companies for free, if they are to continue receiving benefit.

Of course, bad as such are from the current British Government, the other lot wouldn’t do much of anything different. We have already heard Johann Lamont, erstwhile Labour Scottish Branch leader, state that universal benefits are not sustainable, and has authorised a report on what can be taken away..While Blair scrapped clause 4 in order to make Labour more attractive to South of England tories, Ed Balls, the Labour shadow chancellor yesterday totally ducked out of answering whether they would reverse this governments welfare reforms!

I believe very strongly that Scots are not too different in their opinion on Westminster governments behaviour, than those in the North of England, or Wales, but we can do something about it…they unfortunately can’t as yet.

Scots in general have always by nature, been supportive of social reforms, social and community welfare and support, free education, and health provisions free at point of need for everyone. We tend to believe in Social Justice. In effect we still have a sense of community, along with a sense of identity.

However we have to traverse back in time, before Thatcher, to actually find a British government which believed in such things. And we aint likely to get another British government which does.

So as the Cuts bite, as the forced austerity measures on everyone increases, as more are made unemployed and homeless, and as more end it all in despair..

Consider this!

There is no need for austerity measures. It is an unequal contrivance, we are being fed lies!

Since the Big crash 4 years ago.. When the gamblers in the merchant banks finally blew their stack.
Their debts were theirs! Not ours. Yet we are the ones who have been made to pay, and continue paying.
When much has been made of Levison, and the cosy relationship between the main parties of British Government and the press, and the need for press regulation.
There should have been a much more urgent enquiry into the relationships between British politicians and Big Business, and the Financiers in the City of London. The shares and directorships and the moneys received by British politicians from these establishments.
In effect, why did this government and other governments bail them out? Why do they allow massive tax evasions by multinational companies, and why are WE, the 90% paying for something we are not responsible for! Why are the poor, the disabled, the elderly, the children, the frail and the ill, the ones who are made to suffer…while director generals of the BBC can pack their job in after messing up catastrophically to the point of being fired…and receive half a million pounds as way of a sweetener?

Prior to Thatcher the largest companies Chief Executives received 10 times as much as the the poorest worker…Now they receive 810 times as much as the poorest person.

Why I want an Independent Scotland, is not because of some ill judged romanticism about past glories, or battles, or Brigadoon type fairy tales… I want us to have Social Justice and fairness. I want us to have a society which we can be proud of. I want every person in it treated with respect and common decency. I want us to be able to shape the sort of society we all want, and not have all this heap of shit destroying peoples lives, just so a miserly 10% can live it up!

Oh sure..we wont be perfect, we wont suddenly change everything overnight, we will have our struggles, but our future and our lives will be of our own making, and not shackled to the perpetual excesses of governments totally alien to us in nature.

When you look at that snow, and feel the cold..think of those who have been forced on the streets, for whatever reason. They are all human beings, and deserve to be treated with compassion, whatever has brought them to be there. They all had families at some point, they all were somebodies child.

Not all are jakies, addicts, but even those who are, many were abused and self medicated. some have mental illness, some were made destitute by this British Governments policies. I was very nearly homeless myself last year..If it were not for my landlord agreeing to reduce my rent by £80 a month..I would have been on the street! Why? Because my benefits from being made unemployed, would not cover my rent.

So I could be the person out there on your doorstep trying to shelter. And you would walk past me too without a second glance. Are we becoming the sort of people who this government and previous ones are trying to make us..only caring for ourselves? Or do we want better for ourselves and for Scotland?

I found a tweet today from someone I don’t know…and I will share what they said with you.

They had found a lady sleeping on their doorstep a few weeks back, she was a homeless person sheltering there for the night..They brought her in, gave her a hot cup of tea..and then she went on her way.

But here is their Tweet…. Read it!!!

About auldacquaintance

I am not a member of any political party. I am however a strong supporter of Scots Independence. Any views which I express in this Blog are purely my own. This Blog intends to be a place where I will be putting my views on Scots Independence. It will primarily concern itself with the upcoming Referendum In Scotland. However It will also be somewhat diverse in the range of day to day issues which are evident to me in modern day Scotland. Not all of it will be political, and indeed may take me off into avenues I am not even aware of yet. Please come and join in on this journey, and any comments are welcome provided they are not abusive! All the best from a new acquaintance! Rod

Well put. I am ashamed to be British. I don’t like that. I’d rather be indifferent to my nationality, because really it is or should be unimportant, But whenever I am abroad, I stress that I am not, not, not British, I am Scottish.

Actually, being selfish, I wish I had been born Norwegian or Icelandic or Danish… They have the kind of life styles and principles that I could aspire to and would feel happy with. As it is I always feel as if I’m in the wrong place, governed by the wrong people with all the wrong ideas.

I hope that Scotland released from the shackles of the south-east of England will be more concerned about the poor and the sick, and genuinely finding people jobs they can do, than they are with having nuclear weapons and keeping up with America.

Wow that picture says everything there is to say.

  3. Would that happen in the UK?

The tough times are when we need hard fought for social reforms and benefits. The hard times are when those of us with something give a little to those who have nothing. The bitter times are when we define ourselves as compassionate or self seeking. What follows 2014 is our choice, down to us, no shirking of responsibility, we choose which path to take.
