The Conservatives big idea was what they described as BIG SOCIETY, prior to the last general election.
New Labour, who are not so new, now that they have dumped the New…came up recently with ONE NATION..
Now that sounds very like a previous Conservative slogan to me…but that is hardly surprising as Labour have for years been threatening the Conservative base on the Right of British politics. They won a number of elections under Blair by pandering to that Right wing element of English society. In fact at times they have been more Conservative than the Consevatives in their policy…Resulting in the Financial deregulation which led in the Banking Crash of 2008.
Much of the legislation Labour made has allowed this ConDem coalition government free reign to have their brutal assault on the poorest and least able of society. It has opened the door for mass privatisation of the NHS in England, and will in turn threaten Scotland.
The Bedroom tax was already laid out by Labour, when their legislation effected tenants renting from private landlords ..the Tories have merely extended that to include all social housing.
It has been very evident for quite some time that the direction of political travel in England has been veering sharply to the Right. Labour in opposition have sat on their hands and abstained time and again, as the Conservatives wreck merry hell with the welfare state, privatising more than ever…NHS, Royal Mail and anything else they can get their hands on. Why? Because Labour intended doing much the same. When asked if they would repeal the bedroom tax if they got back in…In short they refused to do so.
They were complicit and allowed the Tories space to do their big Pension raid recently. The list goes on.
The attitude towards the unemployed, immigration, the disabled, the working poor, as reported in much of the media..Is Frightening.
But lets not kid ourselves….things are not going to get any better. In fact they may be about to get a whole lot worse!
What is becoming increasingly evident is that the UK is a kingdom completely divided. Not just politically but societally.
Evidence of this division can be seen almost daily now, online, in newspaper comments, on television.
I highlighted the furore over the Have I Got News for You programme…where the studio audience was happily encouraged to tell Scotland to bugger off. Now that has been passed off as political satire by the BBC, and the suggestion is that Scots have lost their humour. We seemingly don’t do satire in Scotland. Bullshit! Scots are masters of Satire when we want it…BBC Scotlandshire is a prime example.
Sneering and Abuse is not Satire, and it aint Funny!
If only such as this was isolated, but unfortunately it is not, it is constant, and much of it would be construed as racism if applied to any other ethnic or cultural group.
But that is the way things have been travelling for a long time, and the societal attitudes and seemingly
social values are now poles apart.
A barometer has been taking place in England and Wales yesterday, with their local elections, and the results are still coming in.. and they are alarming.
Overnight… UKIP are 21% Up in the share of the vote….Labour/Tories/Libdems/Greens combined are 17% Down.
In the South Shields By Election in the seat vacated by Labours David Milliband… Labours majority was halved, and UKIP came second….Having gone from 0% of the vote previously to 24% of the vote.
What does this tell us? It tells us that there is a huge political swing in England to the Right.
It also means that both Conservatives and Labour will veer even harder to the Right than they have been.
It means almost certainly that there will be a referendum to leave Europe, and as things stand…that is what will happen. UKIP also want to do away with the Scottish parliament…now consider what might transpire if UKIP and the Tories form a coalition after the next General election, if we vote NO to Scottish Independence..
I am not saying it will happen…I don’t have a crystal ball… But it is worth being aware of.
I had best leave the last word to Ed Milliband when he was interviewed on radio 4 last week.
Ed: Are Britain’s problems so deep that NOBODY can make a difference to them? My emphatic answer is YES
