Stale Jammy Dodgers

When I was a small child one of my favourite biscuits was jammy dodgers, I am sure that most of you will know what they are, but just in case you don’t let me describe the jammy dodger for you. The jammy dodger is made from shortbread with raspberry jam filling. The top of the biscuit has a hole in the middle which is filled with what appears to be a goodly amount of jam. The rest of the jam is a thin layer sandwiched between the shortbread.
Lovely as the good old jammy dodger appears to be, it is rather deceptive, because with the amount of jam visible in the hole it gives the impression of having lots of jam in it, when in reality when you open it up, there is very little jam at all. It is deceptive and illusionary…Much like the promises that Better Together and their allies have been promising.
Blair Macdougall the Better Together spokesman was interviewed the other evening, and in the course of the interview he stated that the Better Together parties would all provide us with their evidence of all the extra powers their individual committees would recommend that Scotland should receive if we voted No to Independence. This is simply illusion, there can be no substantive promises made by any of them to grant more powers in the line of devo max plus something or other. They can come up with any pipe dream they like, none of them agree with each other, and even if they achieve power in the next parliament, They will be in no hurry to offer Scotland anything of whatever fairy tale they have offered, it will not be in Britains/Greater Englands interests!
Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice shame on me, fool me three times and I am a bloody idiot!
Well we have been fooled by these promises before of jam tomorrow. Alec Douglas Hume offered something better in 1979….We got Thatcher! We were offered substantive new powers to our devolved government under Labour, what we got was a watered down unionist calman commission which actually wanted to give some powers back. So this idea of Devo Max is complete non starter…forget about it! There will be no further inducement for them to give Scotland more powers if we vote NO.
Much as I liked jammy dodgers, have you ever tried to eat a stale jammy dodger? Not only has the jam lost its flavour, it is stale and soft and unpleasant….That is what we are being offered, if ever they get round to offering us anything at all. Yuck!

I know the YES campaign is trying to be all very nicey nicey and not say anything nasty because they are so much wanting to be positive. Good for them, but excuse me if I am not so syrup sweet nice, I am utterly fed up with the anti independence lot spouting a whole pile of liquid keech about Scotland, and neither the YES campaign or the Scottish government kicking them half way to Timbuktu in response.
Don’t get me wrong, I am all for positivity, we have every reason to be positive,Scotland in Independence has got a hell of a lot going for it.
But what I am not seeing anything of is a vital ingredient to independence, people need to be inspired. We need to be able to dream a bit about what we want to aspire to, to what we want to see for ourselves and for our country, and making the it the sort of place that is really great to live in. In short…what do want to do with that Independence once we get it. We sure a hell don’t want to have just more of the same garbage that we have right now, and which we have been putting up with years.
So what I want to know is, where are these voices? Where are our visionaries raising the bar in this debate? Our people need to hear them, and be inspired!

To hell with forever listening to Better Together setting the agenda on the road to nowhere. And as for our own lot…get yer fingers oot! Start showing some passion, some belief, some inspiration, some vision, and start painting the picture for all of us to see, lets move this debate on… Not to whether we can be Independent, we can. Not to rebuffing a load of rubbish… But rather setting forth the ideas which will let people see that we have a multitude of possibilities for a better society better suited to our needs.

What we can be assured of if we allow this opportunity to slip from our grasp is plainly evident today.
The Resolution Foundations analyses has told us that the British Governments deficit reductions of £11 Billion for the year 2015/16 would have to be much severer again for 2016/17, 2017/18 , Cutting at the level of 26 Billion in both years, and that is just to sustain us at the level we are. Irrespective as to who is in power! In effect whatever pain that we may be feeling right now, is absolutely nothing in comparison to what is coming our way!

George Osbourne announced today in his spending review that Millions of public sector workers will lose automatic annual pay increases as part of an £11.5bn cuts package.
He said the cuts, will kick in shortly before the next general election.
Effectively after the Scottish referendum is all done and dusted.
He announced a cap on the total amount the government spends on welfare each year, including housing benefit, disability benefit, tax credits and pensioner benefits.
he announced a tougher regime for job seekers, saying they will have to visit the JobCentre every week to spend more time with advisors. There will also be a seven day wait before people can claim benefits.

“Those first few days should be spent looking for work, not looking to sign on,” said Mr Osborne.

So welcome to the return of the Dole Queue:
“We’re doing these things because we know they help people stay off benefits and help those on benefits get back into work faster.”

There was far more than this announced today, but you get the picture. This is what Being Better Together means by more jam tomorrow, when really they mean what Marie Antoinette is often wrongly attributed as saying…” Let them Eat Cake” upon learning that the peasants had no bread.

So lets stop messing about and kidding ourselves… Things aint going to get any better together, and no jam shall we have.
So instead…lets start talking and thinking and dreaming of what we can begin to achieve once we have Independence, and lets encourage everyone to talk about what we want to see. Let us have Vision.

And then when Independence comes we can have all the Jammy dodgers we like, and they will be filled with our own jam.

I am not a member of any political party. I am however a strong supporter of Scots Independence. Any views which I express in this Blog are purely my own. This Blog intends to be a place where I will be putting my views on Scots Independence. It will primarily concern itself with the upcoming Referendum In Scotland. However It will also be somewhat diverse in the range of day to day issues which are evident to me in modern day Scotland. Not all of it will be political, and indeed may take me off into avenues I am not even aware of yet. Please come and join in on this journey, and any comments are welcome provided they are not abusive! All the best from a new acquaintance! Rod
