Fresh from my chat on Inverclyde radio this morning, (The programme will be repeated tomorrow night at 11pm) where I speak about Independence with a rather broad brush.
One thing that I did reflect on during the Interview was my view that the independence debate should not be hijacked by politicians of any political party. Unfortunately to date, the media have been reluctant to let ordinary people have their say. We have been subjected to a constant round of party political fighting.
Well I have news for the politicians and the media…Independence is not all about them, nor their views. Independence is about the people of Scotland, each and every one of us, It’s about you and It’s about me.
What it is not about is party political point scoring. It is not up to the politicians to tell us what we should think, or how we should vote, and It is not up to them to tell us whether or not we should be Independent.
Politicians are not our masters, and we are not here to do their bidding. They are supposedly in position to serve us!
One would hardly believe it at times, when they act in opposition to our views. Take the Royal Mail sell off for an instance. The vast majority of people according to the polls, by a very large margin were totally against it. Yet Labour tried previously to sell it off, and the Condems have succeeded where they failed. This is utterly wrong on so many fronts.
When The Better Together mob gang up and tell the people of Scotland that Independence is all about the SNP or Alex Salmond, they are talking a whole load of unadulterated manure. When Labour, Conservatives and the Lib Dems say that their members are all against Independence, they are talking rubbish. Not once has any of these supposedly democratic parties ever held a ballot of their members, or allowed their Scottish members to discuss the issue in open forum. They simply tell their members that they have to vote on tribal lines….They obviously don’t like members to have independent thoughts.
The SNP obviously have debated it, but so too have the Scottish Greens, who are not nationalists themselves but still the majority are in favour.
Yet still there are Scottish Labour members, Scottish Conservatives, Scottish Lib Dems who want to have Independence, but are denied a voice in their parties. Why is this? It is because none of these parties are run from Scotland, so the bidding of London and what is best for London must be done!
It is time for them all to waken up and smell the coffee, and it is time for the mainstream media to stop being such servile mouthpieces for them. We need the ordinary people of Scotland to be able to decide our own thoughts, for or against, and we need freedom to have our voices heard.
You deserve to ask your questions, you deserve honest answers, and you deserve to speak if you wish.
This debate is not about which party is best or worst, or which politician you like or dislike. This debate is about what is best for you, your family, your community, and our country ( Scotland)
Politicians come and go, but we will only get one shot at this question, and we will have to live with the consequences of our answers, but let not those who follow in our footsteps look back and call us craven cowards or a parcel of rogues. Let them be able to look back in pride and say ” Look what they made and built for us”
I dare not reflect on what they might think, if we should vote against our Independence, but whatever way we do decide, it is us who will be judged.
So please…. Let The People Speak!
Excellent piece, and the point about it being us is the most important part.We do have a tame media, when it suits them or their fleet Street masters. The media has turned this into a “get Alex Salmond” war. This I believe is at the direct interference of the Westminster party, but I do hope it backfires tremendously,I want and have always wanted an independent Scotland,I got sick of people in various countries say “ah your English” when I said I was from the UK/GB,and having to explain that, the UK is four countries, but when they phoned the BRITISH EMBASSY and ask if its the English embassy they got a reply that it is the English embassy that does not encourage other to think of Britain as four distinct countries, but just another name for England.I am not bitter at this but its just another one of those wee stones that build up into a wall.
