Better Together may ultimately come down to one argument, and that is not that we are indeed Better Together, but rather the case of Better the Devil you know!
This rather lame argument came across my radar earlier today, and when I heard it, I was not at all surprised.
It seems that someone who comes into the undecided camp was struggling with what way they were going to vote in the referendum come the day, and the advice that she was being given by a number of people was the following…” We don’t know what will happen if we vote for Independence, so its probably best to just stick with what we know”
Now that is some argument isn’t it?
What it does is of course strike the fear of uncertainty into folks, and If you follow the mantra which Better Together has been producing, uncertainty is of course at the centre of it. They keep banging on about things being uncertain, that we don’t know what an Independent Scottish government would do, that we don’t know the answers to things which the British government refuse to even begin to discuss, and when we don’t know the answers to these impossible questions which they set……They bang on about uncertainty!
Of course the future is all uncertain, not anyone, not the British government, not the Better Together campaign, and not the powerful American government can tell us what the future holds, otherwise if they knew, we wouldn’t be faced with another major world financial meltdown because the American government is not able to operate and come to agreement at this time. Even the most powerful don’t know what tomorrow brings.
In that way alone, Better Together are making an impossible argument, it doesn’t make any sense! So why are they making this nonsensical argument? Quite simply, it is to go along with their project Fear approach, which is to alarm people out of voting YES, but in doing so they actually admit something else, they just do not have an argument at all as to why not YES!
If All Better Together can do is try to scare people in as many ways as possible as to why not YES, but actually have no real argument as to why we cannot be Independent, then they have already lost the argument, all they have left is playing on peoples Fears!
Bit by bit they have been forced into publicly conceding that the fallacy they produced of Scotland being subsidised by the Uk is entirely untrue. They have been forced to concede that Scotland is perfectly able and capable of being an Independent country and making a go of it (Alastair Darling, David Cameron etc), and forced to admit that Scotland is a very rich country by releasing the 30 year suppressed McCrone report under freedom of Information, so even they cannot say we cannot do it. With no argument left to them, all they can realistically do is play on peoples fears!
The Fear factor is their X Factor, and like the X Factor it is a poor shadow of the Real thing!
Like the populist X Factor, the Fear factor in humanity is a poor second to what we can achieve.
Can anyone really and truly say that any winner of the X factor is as great as the Greats in music? They cannot even do their own thing, what they are allowed to do is what others choose for them, even if they are good singers!
What the Fear Factor in human beings does is stop us from doing things we are capable of, it never allows us to reach anywhere close to what our potential is, and we are so often governed by it in our lives.
When you look back at things you think that you could and should have done, but didn’t do them, what is the major thing that stopped you from achieving your personal goal? I will answer that in One….Fear!
You were scared of something or someone, and you had not the belief in yourself, nor your own convictions, that you could do it…….So you didn’t achieve what you potentially could have done.
Watch and Listen closely to the words that Better Together use….. Uncertainty is oft repeated, so is the word Doubt, and many other negative words.
So when you hear the argument …. ” We don’t know what will happen if we vote for Independence, so its probably best to just stick with what we know”
Start thinking about what we do know! Look at the state of Britain today, the poverty trap, The Rich-Poor divide, The North-South divide, The social inequalities, the dire state of its economy. The billions spent on useless and highly dangerous to us, Nuclear weapons,Food Banks, so on and so forth…. Then think…. What will happen to us if we don’t vote for Independence? Now that thought scares the shit out of me…..
Christopher Columbus did not find the New World because he was scared to move. Man did not step on the Moon because he was afraid to have the vision to see, and the greatest achievements that you can count in your own life were because you chose not to stay as you were but instead decided to take the chance…. If you hadn’t done so….you would never have been happy but would be looking back and saying as we all have done so at times….. ” If Only”
