Actions speak louder than words

Actions speak louder than words, or to put it another way, by your deeds so shall ye be known. Or for that matter what you do not do which you should do!

Yesterday I highlighted the study done by the University of the West of Scotland which proved conclusively that there has been extensive broadcasting bias by the BBC and STV against Scottish Independence in their news reporting.
So I tuned in last night to see if either or both BBC and/or STV would report this very newsworthy story in their evening news. Not at all surprisingly there was not a single mention of the study, indeed BBC Reporting Scotland went all out to prove the study absolutely correct, by reporting 3 news items which could be construed as being negative towards Scotland. Once more, as highlighted in the university study they launched an attack on the subject of health, their second most favoured anti independence topic next to the economy. They have as the study shows, been hammering away at the Scottish NHS for over a year now, and they did not disappoint this time either, wheeling out their health correspondent Eleanor Bradford to allege that Scots are getting a raw deal on our NHS in comparison to England. These attacks has been standard practice by the BBC in both Scotland and in the rest of the UK for some time now. In England the attacks on their NHS have been in support of belittling its effectiveness in order to enable the British government to find excuse to privatise the English and Welsh NHS by the back door.
In Scotland it has another function added, that which can be used to try and shake confidence in the Scottish governments handling of health issues, where we actually have a much healthier Independent NHS than our counterparts south of the border.

As for reporting the extremely newsworthy study on broadcast bias? Not a chance!

I checked to see whether STVs late programme Scotland Tonight would cover it, but no thye were more interested in how Rabbie Burns would have voted on Scottish Independence. Then I checked BBC Scotlands Newsnight programme….ach dont be silly, not a chance!

I in response to Newsnights and ScotNights twitter statements on the evening programmes, and also in response to the STV News account, pressed them all to make a statement on the study, and asked if they had any intention of covering it all? The response from all of them? A big fat Nothing!
So it can safely be said that neither BBC nor STV intend to report it, and they sure as hell dont want to respond to questions on it in any way whatsoever, they will simply act as if it has never existed, and do that ostrich like manoeuvre which they are so fond of doing when there is something positive to be said about Scotland, or conversely where there is some thing harmful to them or to the union. Bury It!

Its not as if they dont like university studies or academic reports, they do, but only the ones which hold to their line. this morning there was another example of that when BBC Scotland news reported as their first item an academic study by Stirling university which suggested that an independent scotland could not do much about dealing with the massive wealth disparity between the rich and the poor. Thats their kind of report, not the sort of report which actually shows them upo to be the unionist propagandists that they and the the rest of the media are!

By your deeds so shall you be known….. well folks it is time to spread far and wide to everyone you know the reality of broadcasting bias which attempts to undermine our democratic rights, so get the news of this study out, on foot, by email, by social media, in the pubs and clubs… The people of Scotland deserve to know how they are being treated and misinformed by our broadcasters. Dont let them away with it!

About auldacquaintance

I am not a member of any political party. I am however a strong supporter of Scots Independence. Any views which I express in this Blog are purely my own. This Blog intends to be a place where I will be putting my views on Scots Independence. It will primarily concern itself with the upcoming Referendum In Scotland. However It will also be somewhat diverse in the range of day to day issues which are evident to me in modern day Scotland. Not all of it will be political, and indeed may take me off into avenues I am not even aware of yet. Please come and join in on this journey, and any comments are welcome provided they are not abusive! All the best from a new acquaintance! Rod

    Spot on Rodmac.

I find it impossible to get my head round the fact that the orchestrators of this deceit are Scots themselves. Are they blind to the denigration of their own country? Do they just not care? Is it purely self-preservation that drives them. They should be ashamed.

Surely this is the elephant in the room in all these debates going on. When I discovered for the first time that Scotland was in no way subsidized by England and in fact we subsidize them my immediate attention was focused on the media who had painted this false picture of reality in my head and most other Scots heads also.
It made me angry and frustrated that the British media had no respect at all for Scotland and its people and on a daily basis misinformed us on a huge scale.
What of democracy in Scotland? I`m now of the thinking that we don`t live in a democracy at all here, given that democracy needs an informed public to choose where to place their votes.
There is no debate going on, there is a fight though. The gloves must come off right here, right now!

We need a new media in Scotland..Real Independent Broadcasting, localised to more than just Glasgow and actually reporting on issues, not speculating or towing ANY party line.

  4. Marian says:

As you indicate the BBC report on the Stirling University research on what could be done about inequality in an independent Scotland is a travesty of what the report actually says which the author Dr Comerford explicitly summarised nicely with his comment that “An independent Scotland would have access to fiscal powers with which it could influence inequality more directly than it can at the moment.”

  5. I am sure that we all knew of the bias, and like me feel embarrassed by it,and also impotent to do anything about it,even a petition will not get mentioned. Will there be repercussions after a big YES vote? I would hope so,so why do they not fear that? Are they confident that the unionists will win?or that they will be protected by Westminster, for Westminster wont protect them as history shows when you are no longer of use to those in power they discard you like “yesterdays paper”

  6. Barney Thomson says:

As broadcasting is a reserved matter, any question of bias in BBC reporting is proper to the UK Government. If a petition to the UK Parliament attracts 100,000 signatures and it is supported by one backbench MP, the Backbench Business Committee is bound to consider it for debate in the House. The BBC and the rest could ignore it but with difficulty.

Would 100,000 people support such a petition?
