Indyref 2 has begun.

With all the mayhem and media concentration on the blood letting In Westminster over the past week, and The Tories and Labour leadership ripping into each other after the Euro Ref result, in a manner resembling the worst excesses of the Roman Empire with Caesar getting stabbed in the back, only with multiple stabbings in this case. The ramifications of the result in Scotland has by and large, but not wholly, escaped the media attention. Oh sure, they have reported in an almost offhand sort of way Nicola Sturgeons visit to the European Parliament, before immediately cutting back to what has been going on at Westminster.
And Yes, they have had the odd mention of what this might mean to the relationship between Scotland and the rest of the UK, before as David Dimbley in his impatient and dismissive tones says “ That’s enough about Scotland” on BBC question time.
We really aren’t all that important to them in the grand scheme of things, not when they are doing their damnedest to support a coup to make the news, on poor Jim Corbyn, and certainly of little interest when it comes to Boris and Gove and the Tory mess.
But while they are being amazingly busy with their own English/British naval gazing, don’t for one second believe they are totally ignoring us, they are not!

What has been happening while all this mayhem has been going on is this..

Indyref 2 has begun, It is only that the official starting gun hasn’t been fired yet…..but begun It most certainly has. Already in the BBC and now ITV news reports, they are being slanted to dissuade people from voting for Independence, and to suggest that Scotland should be good boys and girls and forget about being part of the EU , as according to them, the EU wont allow Scotland to remain, so we should start thinking about holding onto Westminsters hand and think about being part of Europe in the EFTA like Norway, and Iceland.. We are told that it is impossible, because the French and Spanish Prime ministers say so, and in any case Spain has a veto, so forget about it! Utter nonsense of course, Spain has no such veto. So in effect, the British media have already started Project Fear 2 and are running with it, until Westminster sorts itself out and can do it for itself.

But it is not only the British media, that have got up and running, the Scottish Government and the SNP have already set the wheels in motion.
Yes…we know what Nicola Sturgeon is saying in interviews, and in parliament, that her initial motivation and how she is proceeding, is not first and foremost from an Independence perspective, but that she is endeavoring to examine all avenues on behalf of the Scottish people who voted by a large margin to remain in the EU.
Agreement was quickly sought and obtained from the parliament, enabling her to speak to other interested parties in the UK and beyond, to examine all possible avenues and solutions short of, and up to Independence, in order to secure Scotland remaining in the EU, in the event that Britain leaves. And she has been seen to be doing this. She has spoken to the Irish, to the London Mayor, and will participate in the British negotiations, up to a point. She has been to Brussels, and had her meetings there.

But listen to her language… A Scottish Independence referendum is Highly Likely.
It is far more than highly likely, it is an absolute certainty.
Why so?
Because it is the only way possible that Scotland could remain as Britain left.
Forget any of the other suggestions such as the Iceland scenario that the BBC were punting on the news…A Federated UK would not do, Greenland removed itself but still retains certain EU measures because technically they are still a domain of EU member Denmark. A federated Scotland in a UK which had exited the EU, would not be acceptable to the EU. You can’t have an Ex member out, and a federated part in.

Look very carefully what has happened already.

immediately after the Brexit vote…The Daily Record came out for an Independence referendum… given their links with Scottish Labour branch, if Labour up here weren’t already considering that, the Record would not have done so.
Yes….Slab have said that they want to examine the federal option, but they know already it is a non starter, but they can’t be seen to switch over to Indy just like that!
However, senior Labour figures in Scotland very quickly spoke out about Indyref and voting for it. The ground is being prepared.
Lib dem members also approached their leadership too, with the same results, and again cannot be seen to jump horses immediately, but the case is already being put with them too.
The Greens are already on board.

Only the Conservatives are absolutely against, in parliament anyway. Hence the effort to remove any chance of going for Indy in their amendment, and lost conclusively .
Note also, that ever since… All the other parties have rounded on them with a venom, not Labour attacking SNP Bad anymore…but Tory Bad Bad Bad.. and even wee Willie Rennie was having a go at them yesterday.

Further evidence, has been the SNP HQ drive to lapsed members, saying that Indyref2 is now on the table, and they seek support.

But the real conclusive stuff comes from the Scottish Governments European and External Relations Committee, who were told yesterday..

“Discussions on transitional arrangements for an independent Scotland to remain in the European Union (EU) after the UK leaves have been taking place in Brussels, a former senior adviser to the European Commission (EC) has disclosed.

Dr Kirsty Hughes told MSPs discussions have been taking place about putting Scotland in a “transitional holding pen” after Brexit to avoid “an absurd out and then in process”.

She urged MSPs to hold a second independence referendum by summer 2017 at the latest, if it is judged to be in the best interests of Scotland, to allow the EU to start work on these transitional arrangements.”

So there we have it….. Indyref2 and Yes2 now up and running, It is just that starting pistol has not quite gone off yet… That will be I suspect officially in September/October when the British Government finally action Article 50

But make no mistake…. It is Game ON!!!

However It will also be somewhat diverse in the range of day to day issues which are evident to me in modern day Scotland. Not all of it will be political, and indeed may take me off into avenues I am not even aware of yet. Thanks once more for putting these very useful insights into light-hearted and straightforward words. I wonder though if your suspicion of September/October for the British Government to action Article 50 depends on the choice of Tory leader? IMO Gove might well do it immediately, as possibly, might Fox. T. May though as already indicated that the end of the year is her target and I suspect that this might well slip back to later times if necessary..and it could be much later. The other lady is still an enigma to me so, although theoretically she should be expected to do it immediately, who knows?
