Things I learned today:
Some Nationalists are extremely divisive
Article 50 will be implemented by the Conservative government before the end of March next year.
Therefore Britain will exit the EU by March 2019
There will be a Hard Brexit, meaning that Britain will not remain part of the European Single market.
Dead Parrots tell garbage jokes.
And Scottish Tory leaders have an extremely low estimation and derogatory attitude of Scots people (although I kind of guessed that one previously)
Lets begin with Theresa May and her speech to the Conservative conference.
Theresa May ventured forth with the following:
“today we’re going to be hearing from David Davis, Priti Patel and Boris Johnson as we start to explain our plan for Brexit. And the country will see that the Conservative Party is united in our determination to deliver that plan.”
“The referendum result was clear. It was legitimate. It was the biggest vote for change this country has ever known. Brexit means Brexit – and we’re going to make a success of it.”
“I want to use today to tell you more about the Government’s plan for Brexit, and in particular I want to tell you about three important things. The timing, the process – and the Government’s vision for Britain after Brexit.”
“Having voted to leave, I know that the public will soon expect to see, on the horizon, the point at which Britain does formally leave the European Union. So let me be absolutely clear. There will be no unnecessary delays in invoking Article Fifty. We will invoke it when we are ready. And we will be ready soon. We will invoke Article Fifty no later than the end of March next year.”
“the negotiations between the United Kingdom and the European Union are the responsibility of the Government and nobody else. I have already said that we will consult and work with the devolved administrations for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, because we want Brexit to work in the interests of the whole country.”
“But the job of negotiating our new relationship is the job of the Government. Because we voted in the referendum as one United Kingdom, we will negotiate as one United Kingdom, and we will leave the European Union as one United Kingdom. There is no opt-out from Brexit. And I will never allow divisive nationalists to undermine the precious Union ”
In effect, for all her talking about Scotland and the Scottish government being fully consulted and informed in the British governments talks on Brexit, what she really meant was… We will tell you and you will listen, but you will have no say or input whatsoever.
Nicola Sturgeon and her government were originally given the full blessing of all the parties in the Scottish government to examine all avenues which would allow Scotland to remain within the UK and within the EU, including examining these avenues with the British government.
Since then, there has been much backtracking by the leaders of the Conservatives,Labour and the LibDems, probably as they realised what was in the offing. This speech by Theresa May also explains why the Scottish Tories have been banging on about Independence, and it also explains why the sudden upsurge in malicious attacks on the SNP and some of its MPs.
Theresa May clearly states here that the will of the majority of Scots people will be completely and absolutely ignored. There is no possibility of Scotland remaining in both the EU and the UK.
As such, the divisive Nationalism which she speaks of is not Scottish Nationalism which wishes to remain inclusive, but rather British Nationalism which wishes to be divisive, exluded and to exclude.
“The final thing I want to say about the process of withdrawal is the most important. And that is that we will soon put before Parliament a Great Repeal Bill, which will remove from the statute book – once and for all – the European Communities Act.
This historic Bill – which will be included in the next Queen’s Speech – will mean that the 1972 Act, the legislation that gives direct effect to all EU law in Britain, will no longer apply from the date upon which we formally leave the European Union.”
“Whether people like it or not, the country voted to leave the EU. And that means we are going to leave the EU. We are going to be a fully-independent, sovereign country, a country that is no longer part of a political union with supranational institutions that can override national parliaments and courts. And that means we are going, once more, to have the freedom to make our own decisions on a whole host of different matters, from how we label our food to the way in which we choose to control immigration.”
This repeal which she talks about here is the removal of EU law by bits and pieces, however it is not a simple process and perfectly good laws ensconced in Scots Law which relate to devolved matters will require agreement from the Scottish government, and which may well lead to constitutional crisis if Westminster attempts to remove and the Scottish government declines. An example would be the European Law on Human Rights embedded in Scots Law.
When she speaks of “We are going to be a fully-independent, sovereign country”
She misses the point that Britain is not a country, but Scotland and England are Sovereign Countries already. Unless of course through her Thatcherite cloned glasses she means England when she says Britain and we are but part of Greater England.
“So the process we are about to begin is not about negotiating all of our sovereignty away again. It is not going to be about any of those matters over which the country has just voted to regain control. It is not, therefore, a negotiation to establish a relationship anything like the one we have had for the last forty years or more. So it is not going to a “Norway model”. It’s not going to be a “Switzerland model”. It is going to be an agreement between an independent, sovereign United Kingdom and the European Union.”
This negotiating our sovereignty away garbage that she comes out with here is utterly false. Sovereignty was never negotiated away in the first place. The EU is a trading union, and every country in the EU is sovereign in its own right.
When she states that it will not be a “Norway model” or a “Switzerland model”, what she is saying in effect is that when Britain leaves the EU, Britain will not be either in the single market as part of the EU, or outwith the EU. We will not be in either EFTA the European Free Trade Association like Norway, nor part of the EEA European Economic Area. Nor will Britain have the same bi lateral trade arrangements like Switzerland which would involve freedom of movement.
therefore what she is saying here is that it is a Hard Brexit, meaning no participation in the EU single market, and no freedom of movement… In effect it is going to cost us lots!
“I know some people ask about the “trade-off” between controlling immigration and trading with Europe. But that is the wrong way of looking at things. We have voted to leave the European Union and become a fully-independent, sovereign country. We will do what independent, sovereign countries do. We will decide for ourselves how we control immigration. And we will be free to pass our own laws.”
What it boils down to is this… Immigration and Exclusion. Our own laws have always been passed, so it is nonsense to suggest that we are not free to pass our own laws!
let’s get behind the team of ministers – David Davis, Liam Fox, Priti Patel and Boris Johnson – who are working on our plan for Brexit, who know we’re going to make a success of it and who will make a reality of Global Britain.
So let’s have a great week here in Birmingham this conference. Let’s get this plan for Brexit right. Let’s show the country we mean business. And let’s keep working to make Britain a country that works not for a privileged few but for everyone in this great country.”
There we have it…. Now lets wait and see if all these leaders of the Lib Dems, Labour and Tories who warned what Brexit would mean to Scotland and who voted to Remain do now? Will they stand up for what they said they believed, will they stand up for the majority of Scots who voted to remain? Or will they instead bow to Westminster Tory rule?
As to the other things I learned today?
Dead Parrots tell terrible jokes and are racist.
“Why do we let half-educated tenement Scots run our English press ? Because their craving for social status makes them obedient retainers ?”
He might actually have a point about obedient retainers when it comes to some of our journalists and politicians!
After her speech Theresa and Ruth at an event the following happened :
I cannot see for the life of me why any self respecting Scot should have to put up with this nonsense anymore.
It is time for Indyref2… and time to tell May and Westminster where to go!
As for Rennie, Dugdale, and Davidson….Get with the script, or get off your pedestals.
If you are not with us, you will be shortly extinct in Scotland as we make our own way without you.
