Better Together or Independent…Who Cares?

Round and round the mulberry bush Better Together and their compliant media go, always repeating the same questions, always telling the same scare stories. On the other hand the YES campaign are forever drawn into answering these spurious questions, over and over and over again, only for Better Together to come up with other variations of their same questions. No wonder folks are sick of it! But maybe that is the point? Sicken folk into not caring about whether they are better off Independent or not?

Will we be in Europe?
Will we share the pound?
What level of UK debt will we have to stump up?
Will Scotland be poorer for going it alone?
How will we defend ourselves?
Will our remaining ship yards have to close?
Will we be able to pay out pensions?
Will we be able to afford welfare?
Will business desert the country?
How can we possibly manage to survive?

So on and so forth…..

Unanswerables, unknowables, uncertainty, FEARS!!!!

The Idea…..make us so scared of change that we vote NO.
Build the uncertainty to fever pitch,so that we don’t know which ends up?
Repeat the same junk so often that we become totally bored and apathetic we dont even vote.

The majority of folks are left cold as it is, when they should really be engaging in the debate.
Yes, I do know that those like me who are politically aware, read everything, but most folks are not political train spotters.

The Scotish Government released its vision of independence recently in a White Paper…Who has read it? Have you?
Again I would wager that the vast majority have not!

There are loads of things in there which provides answers from one particular view of Independence, and covers a massive variety of questions, yet the majority are still saying that they haven’t enough Information!!

Why is this?

The reason of course being that the media keep punting that line…
It’s a bit like when Donald Rumsfeld in 2002 used the following as an excuse for the Iraq War…

” there are known knowns; there are things we know that we know.
There are known unknowns; that is to say, there are things that we now know we don’t know.
But there are also unknown unknowns – there are things we do not know we don’t know.”

The Axis of Fear, The War on Terror, was born…using Fear of the unknown to persuade the populace to do something, go to war…rather than Better Togethers strategy of using peoples Fears to not do something, become Independent.

We see how the Axis of Fear has worked….we know there were humongous lies told, Iraq did not have weapons of mass destruction, millions of lives have been lost, and the war rages on from place to place… But the objective has been achieved, and that is all that matters to these people!

The Bush administration, in a sense, got what it wanted in the wider Middle East. To battle a fictitious Shi’ite crescent (a construct by Jordan’s King Abdullah), it has emboldened even more a reactionary Sunni crescent (Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates), thus exacerbating to a paroxysm the “strategy” it has already applied in Iraq: sectarianism as the golden parameter of imperial divide and rule.

What you see in Syria today, and from other countries in the Arab Spring, are as a direct result of American imperialism.

It was nothing other than a replay of the British Empire’s divide-and-rule. Washington sowing the seeds of discord among Muslims: “Bush and his allies were in favour of further unrest, turmoil and crises so that they can justify deployment of their troops in the region.”

We have seen proponents of Better Together raise the sectarian divide here too, bringing the Northern Irish Unionists into the debate…Urging sectarian division between Catholics and Protestants….Its old stuff, but tried and tested, and works with the bigoted and uneducated.

No wonder Better Together coined the phrase “Project Fear” for themselves…because it is the one fully truthful thing that they have said….even if they didn’t want that getting out!

So given all of the above…What should we be looking for?

I cannot speak for anyone else, only myself.

I want to see a Scotland where social justice prevails, and people are put first.

I want to see an end to the victimisation of the poor, the unemployed, the chronically Ill and disabled, carried out by a self interested political elite in London.

I want a Scotland that focuses on Peace not War, while being able to defend ourselves should the need arise.

I want and End to Food banks, by creating an economy which follows the best Scottish example of business creation and endeavour, through education, business support and development. We have the resources, so lets use them to our advantage.

I want a Scotland that reduces welfare dependency, by creating real opportunity for our populace, and at the most basic level, provides a decent living wage.

I want a Scotland that ceases to follow the British states political format, becomes less party orientated, and provides local structures for people to actively get involved in having a say in what happens in their communities.

I want a Scotland that does something about the disgraceful Rich-Poor divide which gives everything into the hands of 1% of society, and leaves the rest of us living on scraps to various extents.

What I do not want to see…

More of the attack on the welfare state, the likes of the disgraceful bedroom tax, and the use of welfare to demonise the unemployed, and strip them of benefits and dignity and food, for the flimsiest of excuses.

I no longer want to see nuclear weapons which could blow up half the Western world situated on our shores, because it suits mad power brokers to sit at some top table somewhere.

I no longer want to see our service personnel fighting other peoples useless wars and coming back in body bags!

There is so much more that I hope to see for my children and childrens children, but the main thing is that they will have the full ability one day to shape their country how they want it to be, and not like me and so many others, be lumped to putting up with what is forced on us by governments elsewhere we never voted for nor wanted!

So let us look forward with Vision and Positivity and Determination, NOT live with FEAR!

Change is not to be feared, not when we are the authors of it ourselves.

  1. We need change to progress and independence is the change that is required.

Interesting parallel with the ‘War on Terror’ Auld Acquaintance. You could perhaps describe Project Fear as a ‘War OF Terror’.
Perhaps we should use it as a rule of thumb that when politicians try to scare us into supporting something it’s a sign of something we should not be supporting?

The problem we have as we keep on saying is that the news agenda is controlled by the No campaign.Unless people come to web sites like this, all they are going to hear from the London press pack is fear and smears repeated over and over.
Having said that, the media and dodgy poll predictions have never determined the outcome in Scotland previously but in this case it is unremitting negative propaganda on a huge scale.
I think we need to keep the message simple:

We will be better off after independence.
WE (us Scots) will protect our public services including our health service after independence.
We will always get the government we collectively elect.
We will have no more Thatcherite governments (including the British Labour ones).
Why would any rational Scot not want these things?

    Hi Auld Yin,

  5. One of the things I have been saying to NO voters that appears to strike a cord, when all the arguments fail, is that I will apologise to all the children in the event of a NO vote. I’ll apologise for the poverty, for the destruction of social security, for foodbanks, for the death of local services, for the lack of a democracy, for the house of lords and unelected head of state, I’ll apologise for robbing them of a chance at a better future.

Laughed at the new tactics of Project Fear. Cons MP Rory Stewart, calling for 1000 people to come together, join hands along Hadrian’s Wall and show their “love” for the Scots. Really, really, scary!!!!!
