Power to the People

Following fast on the heels of the sale of our Royal Mail, where City Financiers all made a very quick fast buck at our expense, we were told by the Royal Mails CEO to expect a rise in the cost of mail services. Now we have the power companies all lining up to line their Investors pockets, with the North of Scotland being hit by the largest price rises (British Gas 11.2% rise for North of scotland) while those in the South of England have significantly lower increases at nearly half the increased cost. (British Gas South West of England, 6.2%)

One of the first things I would like to see in an Independent Scotland is the re nationalisation of essential services, which never should have been sold off in the first place.
I am not a fan of nationalising everything, just the services which we can all regard as essential.
I know the SNP have already gone on record saying that they will re nationalise the Royal Mail, but they should go further than that. They should be promising to re nationalise Electricity, Gas and Rail. Thankfully Scottish Water is still in our hands, but only because the SNP won the last Holyrood election, despite agitation by Labour, Tories and Lid Dems to privatise it. How long it remains in our hands depends on one of two things….Either a continuation of SNP governments after a failed YES referendum, or Independence itself. Make no bones about it, it will be sold off if neither of these two things happen.

Water charges in England and Wales rose ten fold on privatisation of water, with continual problems of private companies failing to properly maintain and service pipes and equipment, while in comparison Scottish Water has remained at reasonable prices with a good running and in profit nationalised company, which continues to invest in its infrastructure.

In the meantime Energy companies have year on year continued to make obscene profits for themselves and their investors and we are the ones who have to pay for it all, to the degree that some people are faced with the stark choice of choosing between food and heating in the winter, and it will only get worse.
It is obscene that an energy rich Scotland should be subsidising the rest of the UK with our excess energy and having to pay for the privilege of keeping their prices lower, whist facing the largest price hikes ourselves. It is just not on!
As the rUK under Westminster strike deals with the Chinese to build more dirty fuel nuclear power stations in order to maintain the Souths ever growing need for more and more energy, with the threats of power cuts on the horizon, they have already admitted that these power stations too could well end up in Chinese ownership. We in Scotland will have to pay our share of these costs too, when we have more energy than we need.

As if it isn’t bad enough that these right wing governments are systematically dismantling the welfare state and privatising the NHS in England and Wales through the back door, we in Scotland are paying through the nose for their excesses from which only the minority of the richest benefit from.

The only way for Scotland to have a fairer more balanced and progressive society is for us to go our own way, we have no hope of doing so in this deeply imbalanced political union.
In short…If you want more of this pain, want to have less say, want to pay more, and wish to throw your childrens future on the scrapheap…vote to remain in the union.

Now that thought is a REAL Scarey Story!

Vote NO for much much more of the same. Oh wonderful it is to be Better Together.

About auldacquaintance

I am not a member of any political party. I am however a strong supporter of Scots Independence. Any views which I express in this Blog are purely my own. This Blog intends to be a place where I will be putting my views on Scots Independence. It will primarily concern itself with the upcoming Referendum In Scotland. However It will also be somewhat diverse in the range of day to day issues which are evident to me in modern day Scotland. Not all of it will be political, and indeed may take me off into avenues I am not even aware of yet. Please come and join in on this journey, and any comments are welcome provided they are not abusive! All the best from a new acquaintance! Rod

  1. We have the unacceptable face of capitalism here and they must be stopped,Nationalise all utilities and NO COMPENSATION.I know seems Bolshevik but we are being ripped off and the money is not going back into the country its going elsewhere.

  2. R Don says:

    I’m with the re-nationalisation crowd

  3. tartanfever says:

Centrica (the British gas parent company) issued dividends of (take a seat, you’ll probably fall down on hearing this) of over £3.5 BILLION over the last five years to it’s shareholders.

And they say they don’t have the money to invest in infrastructure ! Centrica are deliberately avoiding investment in infrastructure because they know they don’t have to – when push comes to shove the Westminster government will pay for it. A tory govt will sell it to us ‘we have no choice, we have to pay for it, it’s the recession, it’s the price of world energy, it’s the lack of investment during the last labour govt ‘ etc.
In the meantime, Centrica will concentrate it’s operation on the stock markets, trying to push the share price higher and attract new investors due to the healthy returns.
Directors and CEO salaries will rise, as will investors shareholding and the people who will pay for it are us – the poor, the weak, the cold, the disabled.
We are being conned and given excuses by Westminster while the fawning BBC continue to fail to report this.
