In the discussion I was having yesterday I was asked if I would listen to any arguments that Better Together might make with regards to Independence? My answer was that I was perfectly prepared to listen, but only if they had something positive or relevant to say to me. Unfortunately there has been absolutely no sign whatsoever of them making any positive argument in support of the union, at least not any that actually matter to people.
All we have had from them in the way of debate is continual and unremitting negativity. All they can say is that Scotland is too insignificant, too poor and hasn’t got anything going for it. In effect, all they have continued to do is insult just about every Scot and that includes those Scots who are their supporters, if only they were wise enough to notice the insults.
The other mantra that they come out with is that they don’t have enough information from the YES side, with so many unanswered questions. Of course given that the British government absolutely refuses to enter into dialogue over Independence, there is no chance of any of their questions being answered pre independence.
Words such as ” Scare” “Warning” ” Anxiety” ” uncertainty” abound in just about every statement they make.
Even when they try to couch their argument in what they ascribe to positive reasons for Scotland to remain in the union they do so in negative terms.
If Scotland goes it’s own way, they say that Scotland will no longer retain places at the Worlds top tables.
Britains place on the UN Security Council is under threat, Scotland will no longer have the clout in Europe that the union provides. Scotland may not be allowed to remain in NATO if we ditch trident, Scotland will not be able to take up the roll that Britain does in war conflicts, Scotland will be reliant on VOLATILE Oil prices, where Britain can manage it much better for us, Scotland will be wide open to terrorist attacks while Britain protects us from them. So on and so forth.
These are not arguments for why Scotland is Better Together in the Union, these are arguments why Britain would be worse off without us. It is not about us, it is about them!
We don’t need to sit on the Security Council, we will have more clout in Europe should we choose to remain in the EC, by having more not less representation than we get in the union, our MEPs would increase from 6 to 13.
We will be allowed in NATO, most NATO countries do not have nuclear weapons and no way will NATO want to see a massive hole in the North Atlantic defences with Scotland outside it. WE don’t want Trident, we have made that abundantly clear, Westminster if they want to have 240 Hiroshimas on their doorstep so badly can place it in the Thames..Remember remember the 5th of November would be a little sparkler in comparison. Scotland would not be acting gung ho as Americas sidekicks in continual war, and our brave lads and lassies would not be coming back in body bags with regularity. I am sure the rUK can continue as it so wishes, but without any further needless Scots sacrifice for the former empire.
As for volatile Oil prices? Has anyone seen or likely to see oil prices do anything but carry on upwards? Sure they fluctuate a bit from year to year, but that applies to any commodity, I am sure we can manage fine with these resources, not sure that they can manage so fine without them? Have you ever heard of any country getting poorer for having Oil? Well Yes, I have, Scotland without receiving the benefits of it! We are indeed unique.
As for terrorist attacks? Who is it that gets themselves involved with conflicts in other countries? No wonder they fear terrorist attack, but we need not. You don’t hear of other stable European countries facing them, no reason that we should be any different.
What they will not do, is tell us how our lives as a continuing part of the union will improve. They have no interest whatsoever that so many of Scots children don’t get enough to eat, or that poorer people are getting poorer, with more and more of those who were once comfortable falling into the poverty trap. All we need do is look at Westminster policies for decades to see that they have been continually asset stripping Scotland. We must be Better Together though because food prices are not continually going up, fuel and energy prices are stable, people are getting loads of job opportunities, no extra tax on social tenants, and the welfare state and NHS is running as sweet as can be. Aye right!
Instead the various Better Together parties are all saying that they are looking at the possibility of giving Scotland more devolved power, but we have to wait until we have voted NO to Independence before they will tell us what they are, but even if they all come up with fantastic ideas, nobody has the power to carry them out, the next Westminster government will have to debate what these might be, if any at all? Oh Yeh….sounds so good my head is buttoned up the back!
In short, Better Together has no argument for why Scots should remain in the Union, so why should we stay?
Better Together equates to Not Good Enough!
